Tribal member leaves North Dakota higher ed board

Charles Murphy, the former chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, has resigned from the North Dakota Board of Higher Education.

Murphy was appointed by Gov. John Hoeven (R) last May but he has missed six out of 12 meetings since then. His attendance has been an issue, The Fargo Forum reported.

Shortly after joining the board, Murphy stepped into debate over the controversial "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota. The board voted 8-0 to proceed with a lawsuit against the NCAA's Indian mascot policy.
