Bush urged to nominate Hopi woman for U.S. Attorney

President Bush is being urged to nominate Diane Humetewa, a member of the Hopi Tribe, as U.S. Attorney for Arizona.

Sen. John McCain (R) and Sen. Jon Kyl (R) say Humetewa, a lawyer, is highly qualified for the job. Both senators recommended that she be nominated to replace Paul Charlton, who is stepping down at the end of the month.

?I am proud to recommend Diane to serve our country in this noble role. As a native Arizonan, Diane has a sound appreciation for the culture and legal issues unique to the region,? said McCain.

Humetewa has worked for the Department of Justice and several U.S. Attorneys. She also worked for McCain during his two tenures as chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, with her most recent stint taking place in the year 2005.

If nominated by Bush and confirmed by the Senate, Humetewa would appear to be the first Native woman to serve as U.S. Attorney.
