Montana student hopes to advocate for Natives

Katie Hoyt is graduating from Montana State University with a degree in chemical engineering but after spending a summer as an intern in Washington, D.C., she sees a different future.

Hoyt, a member of the Tlingit Tribe of Alaska, wants to become an advocate for tribes in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. She is looking at an advanced degree in public health, law or policy.

"Even though I'm not thinking about a graduate degree purely in engineering, I really enjoy the advantages that an engineering background provides," Hoyt, 22, told MSU News Service. "With my science background, I'd like to work on the environmental health disparities that tribes deal with."

For now, Hoyt is headed to El Salvador to teach English when she graduates in December.
