Rep. Henry Waxman (D-California), the chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, asked the White House on Wednesday to turn over more documents related to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
The White House has turned over 3,700 documents to the committee. But an estimated 600 pages are "internal documents and internal deliberations" and probably won't be released, a White House spokesperson said.
Abramoff, a high-paid lobbyist who pleaded guilty to defrauding his tribal clients, visited the White House several times since the start of the Bush administration. His former assistant went to work for top Bush aide Karl Rove and he arranged for at least one tribal leader to meet President Bush.
According to Secret Service documents, Abramoff visited the White House around the same time that J. Steven Griles was nominated to his position at the Interior department. Griles is serving prison time for his role in the Abramoff scandal.
