Ex-Yakama business manager sues tribal leaders

The former business manager for the Yakama Nation of Washington is suing tribal leaders in state court for defamation.

Lehigh John was fired from his job at the Yakama Land Enterprise, which oversees the tribe's businesses. Tribal leaders and an employee accused him of essentially stealing from the tribe.

John said the false accusations have caused him emotional stress and loss of income. He wants damages from three tribal council members and from the current business manager.

Since the lawsuit names individual tribal members and not the tribe, John's lawyer said sovereign immunity is not an issue.
