Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota) suffered a brain hemorrhage last December but a speedy recovery has enabled him to stay an active member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Johnson signed off on several earmarks for the Rosebud Sioux Tribe while he was in recovery. "From our stance, Sen. Johnson never really left," Shenan Atcitty, a lobbyist at Holland & Knight, told The Hill newspaper.

Johnson returned to the Senate in September. He attended his first Senate Indian Affairs Committee appearance on September 27, at a hearing on violence against Native women.

He also has met with tribal leaders back in South Dakota, where he made his first public appearance in August.
