University seeks more Native post-graduates

The University of Alaska Fairbanks is using a $40,000 grant to recruit more Alaska Natives into post-graduate programs.

Since 1989, UAF has awarded 401 doctoral degrees but only five have gone to Native graduates. “Which is just really not acceptable,” Bernice Joseph, the university's vice chancellor for rural, community and Native education, told The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.

The grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will help the university plan a recruitment program. It will also be used to develop a new doctorate in education with an emphasis on indigenous studies

Of the overall university student population, about 19 percent is Native. Only 3 percent of the faculty is Native.
