Indian candidates are learning how to run campaigns for public office at INDN's List's annual camp on the Morongo Reservation in California this week.
With seminars like "Delivering an Effective Message," "Creating Your Stump Speech," and "Opposition Research Basics," attendees are getting the support they need. "Coming here, it became very concrete - I am capable of doing this," Maya Torralba, a member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma, told The San Bernardino Sun.
INDN's List supports Democratic candidates. Of the 26 it endorsed in 2006, 20 of them won their elections.
The camp coincides with the "Prez on the Rez" forum featuring New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio and former Sen. Mike Gravel of Alaska. The debate takes place tomorrow.
