Eastern Band candidates debate as election nears

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina holds elections for chief and vice chief in September.

Incumbent Chief Michell Hicks faces a challenge from Patrick Lambert, an attorney and director of the tribal gaming commission. At a debate Monday night, Hicks and Lambert sparred over failed negotiations for a Class III gaming compact.

incumbent Vice Chief Larry Blytheis being challenged by Teresa McCoy, who questioned Blythe's record on a number of different issues.
