Native woman loses job for disagreeing with tribe

An Alaska Native woman has been fired from her job with the Stebbins Village council for opposing a development project.

Patricia Henry started gathering signatures for a petition against the gravel pit development. That prompted the tribal council to initiate removal procedures, accusing her of leaking confidential information to the public and the media.

Four members of the village council voted to remove Henry. One person abstained and one person voted to retain her.

The project is officially supported by the Stebbins village corporation, which owns the land. Most of the tribal council supports the development.
