The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma hopes to convince South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) to agree to an off-reservation casino.
Haley has expressed doubts about signing a Class III gaming compact with the tribe and supporting a land-into-trust application. But the tribe, and its developers, hope to present her with a plan by the end of the year. "I've never known of an economic development in South Carolina where more than 4,000 jobs are going to be created, with $180 million in compensation, and the investors do not ask for a dime from anybody," Bob McAlister, who is part of the development team, told The Island Packet.
