County weighs an extension of Menominee Nation gaming deal

Officials in Kenosha County, Wisconsin, are considering a longer-term extension of an off-reservation gaming agreement with the Menominee Nation.

The extension would run until March 31, 2013. That coincides with the end of the tribe’s option to purchase the proposed gaming site, The Kenosha News reported.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has agreed to reconsider the tribe's land-into-trust application as part of a settlement. The tribe anticipates a decision early next year but some local officials are worried about the process.

“It’s a false hope for everybody,” city council president Jesse Downing, who otherwise supports the casino, told the paper. “If there’s a better development for that property, then develop it.”
