California governor still weighing off-reservation casino bid

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) has until next September to make a decision on an off-reservation casino for the Enterprise Rancheria.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the casino but Brown has veto authority under the two-part determination section of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. He's being lobbied on both sides of the controversy.

"Ultimately, this is about economic development," Chairwoman Glenda Nelson told The Marysville/Yuba City Appeal-Democrat.

The tribe is headquartered in Butte County. Plans call for a casino in Yuba County, about 36 miles from the reservation, but Nelson said the land is within the tribe's aboriginal territory.
