The city of Oacama, South Dakota, is opposing an off-reservation casino for the Lower
Brule Sioux Tribe.
In a submission to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Mayor Mike Schreiber raises concerns about the local workforce, housing, infrastructure and tax revenue. He also says the 92-acre casino site is too far for tribal members to travel even though its only about 12 miles from the reservation border and 27 miles from tribal headquarters.
The tribe is pursuing the casino under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988. The state governor's approval will be required.
The land is already in trust but it wasn't acquired for gaming purposes so the tribe has to seek federal and state approval.
