The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut faces just one competitor for a commercial casino in western Massachusetts. The tribe plans to build the Mohegan Sun Palmer in the town of Palmer. The project enjoys local support -- the host agreement for the casino will be put to a referendum on November 5. "We are confident that our nearly $1 billion resort casino proposal, which will bring thousands of new jobs and economic development to Palmer and the region, represents the best choice for Western Massachusetts," Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority CEO Mitchell Etess said in a statement to The Hartford Courant. The other competitor is MGM Resorts International. Voters in Springfield already approved the gaming giant's host agreement.
Hard Rock International, which is owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, was knocked out of the running when voters rejected a host agreement in a referendum on Tuesday.
