The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut has reached a host agreement for a commercial casino in Massachusetts.

The tribe agreed to pay $32 million up front to the town of Milford, plus annual payments of $31 million. The payments are far higher than those being offered by the Mohegan Tribe, also from Connecticut, for a casino in a different region of Massachusetts.

“This is as strong an agreement as we can come up with,” Selectman Brian Murray said at a meeting in which the agreement was approved by a vote of 2-1, The Milford Daily News reported.

The tribe plans to build a 980,000-square-foot casino in Milford, a town about 35 miles from Boston, the most populous city in the state. The project must be put to a local vote as part of the competitive process.
