The House Natural Resources Committee will consider H.R.1410, a bill that would prevent the Tohono O'odham Nation from opening an off-reservation casino in Arizona, at a markup session on Wednesday. The Keep the Promise Act doesn't mention any tribes by name. But its bars Class II and Class III gaming on land acquired in the metro Phoenix area after April 9, 2013 -- a provision that applies to the Tohono O'odham Nation's proposed West Valley Resort. The House Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs held a hearing on the bill on May 16. The Bureau of Indian Affairs testified against the measure. Wednesday's markup takes place at 10am in Room 1324 of the Longworth House Office Building. It will be webcast. Audio from the May 16 hearing can be found on the Indianz.Com SoundCloud. The BIA testimony starts at about 1:10 in the Panel 1 file. Panel 3 includes tribal leader testimony on the bill.
