The Dry Creek Rancheria of California doesn't plan on opening a new casino but officials in the city of Petaluma are drafting a letter against one anyway.
The tribe submitted a land-into-trust application to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for 277 acres. The application says the property won't be used for gaming but the letter questions the tribe's intent.
“The tribe has long had the ability to develop the property consistent with applicable local zoning,” a draft of the letter states, The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reported. “The only point of taking the property into trust would be an effort to override local zoning and other state laws.”
The city council will discuss the letter at a meeting on August 5, the paper said.
