The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut unveiled a new design for its proposed commercial casino in western Massachusetts.

The tribe plans to spend $1 billion on the Mohegan Sun Palmer, a facility that will include a water park, retail space and two hotels. That's a big jump from an earlier estimate of $600 million.

"I think that Mohegan Sun Massachusetts is really going to be like nothing the Commonwealth has ever seen. We want to take full advantage of what we know is clearly the best location for resort gaming in Massachusetts," Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority chief executive officer Mitchell G. Etess said at a public meeting last night, The Springfield Republican reported.

The tribe's plans have been well received in the town of Palmer. As part of the process, local voters will have their say -- a referendum is being scheduled.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission expects to award the license for the western part of the state in early 2014.
