The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will meet March 21 to discuss progress on a tribal casino in the southeastern region of the state. H.3702, the state's gaming law, sets aside the casino for "a federally recognized tribe." The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is pursuing the casino but has been dealt with setbacks so the commission will consider whether to wait some more or open the region to non-Indian bidders. The tribe is close to a new Class III gaming compact with the state. And the Bureau of Indian Affairs has promised to make a decision on the tribe's land-into-trust application this spring.
