Editorial: Non-Indian casino bid a lost cause in Oregon this year

"In recent weeks members of The Register-Guard’s editorial department have interviewed about 20 candidates for positions in the Oregon Legislature. Not one of them expressed support for Ballot Measures 82 and 83, which would allow a private non-tribal casino in the Portland area. All of the candidates — Republicans and Democrats, coastal and inland, urban and rural — are against the casino.

The casino’s backers must have encountered a similar consensus. On Tuesday the Canadian investors and their Lake Oswego partners who had spent $5 million promoting the casino plan suspended their campaign. Measures 82 and 83 will still be on the Nov. 6 ballot, and the casino would be built if by some fluke voters approve the initiatives, but the sponsors see no point in pouring more money into what they’ve concluded is a losing cause."
