J. Steven Griles, criminal Has J. Steven Griles, the former deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior and best friend forever of Quapaw Tribe Chairman John Berrey, reported to prison for lying to Congress?

It sure looks like it. The Bureau of Prisons website lists him in custody at the Petersburg Federal Correctional Institution in Petersburg, Virginia.

According to the Inmate Locator, Griles is due to be released July 13, 2008. He was sentenced to 10 months so that means he reported for shower duty on September 13, 2007! How we missed this, we don't know.

We only wish he had been forced to serve his time in an Indian Country detention facility. After all, while he was busy doing the bidding of Jack Abramoff, reservation jails only got worse under his watch. But as long as he's locked up, that's all that matters.

Now, as for the prison saga of another former Interior Department official...stay tuned for that story!
