Mohawk chiefs reworking land, gaming settlement

WEDNESDAY, JULY 16, 2003

The new leaders of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation are reworking a land and gaming deal their predecessors announced with the state of New York.

The initial deal called for the tribe to drop its land claim for $100 million and 7,000 acres. The new leaders are creating a 20-member commission to examine this part of the agreement.

The new leaders are opposing about a provision that called for tribal businesses to collect and remit state taxes on the sale of goods to non-Indians. One chief said the "price parity" deal was not a good agreement.

The chiefs appear to be happy with part of the deal that addressed gaming rights on and off the reservation.
