R.I. governor promises to help Narragansett Tribe

Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri visited the Narragansett Reservation on Tuesday, the first visit by a state governor to the tribe's lands in 20 years.

Carcieri said he came to get a better understanding of the economic conditions on the reservation. He found them somewhat deplorable.

The tribe has a 1,600-acre reservation but can't use the land for gaming without state approval due to the tribe's settlement act. The tribe wants to open a tax-free tobacco shop but Carcieri is opposing it.
