More reaction to renaming peak for Piestewa

MONDAY, APRIL 14, 2003

Jesse L. Cuilty: "Unlike the name 'Squaw,' Piestewa Peak would bring great honor to the history of this land and its peoples, and a message that when people recognize their common humanity there will be no longer be a need for war."

Bill McCabe: "I'm trying to think of a time that I've seen a better idea written about on the editorial page of any paper. Renaming Squaw Peak as Piestewa Peak makes more sense than all the rest of the politically correct rhetoric that has been spouted over the years."

Bill McCullough: "How tawdry of The Republic to denigrate Lori Piestewa in pursuit of yet another of its liberal goals."

Christina Marshall: "By renaming Squaw Peak to honor Lori Piestewa, we can let her presence in the mountain speak to all of us about her bravery, sacrifice, and now her eternal peace."

Robert Moore: "I, like many non-Native Americans, have never seen what all the uproar was over this term. I now see that the word is indeed derogatory and belittling the honor of the Native American woman."

Valerie M. LittleChief: "I am an Native American Kiowa-Comanche woman. I have lived in Arizona for 20 years, and personally do not find the references to our landmarks as offensive. However, renaming "Squaw Peak" to "Piestewa Peak" would not only give great honor to Lori and the state of Arizona, but would extinguish the ongoing battle of this controversy."

Dan Sands: "Lori Piestewa deserves much more than to have the name of Squaw Peak changed to Piestewa Peak in her honor."
