Janklow-Herseth-Begay debate issues

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2002

The three candidates for South Dakota's House seat took part in a televised debate on Wednesday.

Governor Bill Janklow, a Republican, is facing a tough challenge from political newcomer Stephanie Herseth, a Democrat. Terry Begay is the Libertarian candidate.

Polls show the race split between Janklow and Herseth. The campaign has been characterized as rather clean, with both taking pains to avoid direct criticism. Begay, according to the media, is not considered a contender.

Janklow and Herseth said they support better management of the Missouri River. Janklow said the river should flow naturally. Herseth supports a bill to take away management from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
