Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris campaigns on the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona on October 10, 2024.
"I strongly believe that the relationship between tribal nations and the United States is sacred and that we must honor tribal sovereignty, embrace our trust and treaty obligations and ensure tribal self-determination," Harris said at the Rawhide Event Center, a venue owned by the Gila River Indian Community.
"And it is my promise: As president of the United States, I will defend those principles always," Harris said.
During her remarks, Harris thanked Stephen Roe Lewis, the governor of the Gila River Indian Community, noting she had been to the reservation before. As vice president, she visited the tribe on July 6, 2023.
"Last summer, I became the first vice president of the United States to visit this tribal nation," Harris said.
Harris also urged voters to support Jonathan Nez, a former president of the Navajo Nation. He is the Democratic nominee for Arizona's 2nd Congressional district.
"Let’s send former Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez to the United States Congress," Harris said.
