During an appearance on Fox News on September 20, 2024, Tim Sheehy, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Montana, sidestepped questions about comments in which he repeatedly linked Native people to alcohol.
Sheehy did not deny charactering Native people as "drunk at 8am" or throwing beer cans at him. Instead, he claimed that audio recordings of him were somehow edited.
“As you know, they’ll take recordings from years ago, chop them up and make them sound, you know, evil,” Sheehy said.
Sheehy's full remarks follow:
"Well, as you know, they'll take recordings from years ago, chop them up and make them sound, you know, evil. It'll make me sound, you know, like somebody I'm not.
The reality is, you know, I spend more time in our tribal communities than Jon Tester ever has. You know, we rope and brand together on the Crow Reservation. You know, we ranch alongside them.
And the reality is what they're trying to do is package a narrative because they're desperate. They're looking at these polls that show them down."
Sheehy's appearance on Fox News marked the first time he has addressed his comments about Native people since Char-Koosta News, first reported them on August 29, 2024.
