Tribes in Connecticut still working on process for potential casino

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe still haven't decided on a location for a potential new casino.

Last November, the tribes received five proposals from four communities and planned to select a site by December. That deadline slipped and now it looks like the process could last a few more weeks or possibly even longer.

"We have to come back with a chosen location, and so, for everyone's benefit, it's best we make sure we take our time and do it right," Mohegan Chairman Kevin Brown said at a press conference on Monday, The Hartford Courant reported.

The tribes believe a new casino will help them address competition from neighboring Massachusetts. MGM Resorts International, a non-Indian company, is building a $950 million casino in Springfield, just a few miles from the state border.

The sites being considered are in the region near the border. Once the tribes pick a location, they would still need approval from the Connecticut Legislature to open another casino.
