The Lac du Flambeau Band of
Wisconsin could benefit from going smoke-free at its casino, according to a study, but a researcher said the tribe isn't ready for that step yet.
The tribe partnered with the Great
Lakes Inter–Tribal Council to survey about 1,000 players club members at the
Lake of the Torches Resort
Casino. Overall, more than 75 percent of patrons said they don't smoke and
more than two-thirds said smoking bothers them.
Epidemiologist Isaiah Brokenleg of the GLITC said a smoking ban would have to be approved by tribal members. But since 40 percent are regular tobacco users, that might be hard to achieve right now.
American Journal of Preventive Medicine next month.
