The Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians held a public meeting last night on its proposed off-reservation casino in Shullsburg, Wisconsin.
The tribe plans to build a $50 million casino on a 20-acre site in the city. A land-into-trust application has been submitted to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, a process that will take at least two years, tribal leaders said at the meeting. The Bush administration first rejected the proposal in January 2008 under a guidance memo that said Shullsburg was too far from the reservation to benefit tribal members. The Obama administration rescinded the memo. Shullsburg is about 300 miles from tribal headquarters. Get the Story:
