City wants to discuss gaming with two Wampanoag tribes
Thursday, October 20, 2011
The city council in New Bedford, Massachusetts, has invited the Mashpee Wampanoag
Tribe and the Aquinnah Wampanoag
Tribe to a meeting tonight to discuss gaming.
The tribes haven't said whether they will attend, The New Bedford Standard-Times reported. But both are interested in gaming now that lawmakers have passed a bill to authorize a casino in their region of the state.
The city council is also meeting with two non-Indian developers. The bill gives the state about a year to negotiate a Class III gaming compact -- after that, bids can be opened to other entities.
