Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) is urging Gov. Jerry Brown (D) to reject an off-reservation casino for the Enterprise Rancheria.
The tribe is seeking a two-part determination to build a casino about 36 miles from the reservation, according to the environmental impact statement. The Bureau of Indian Affairs has approved the project and now Brown has about a year to accept or veto it. But Feinstein says the local community doesn't support the casino or another one proposed by the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians. That site is also about 36 miles from the reservation, according to the environmental impact statement. "The Department of Interior's conclusion that the proposed casinos enjoy 'strong community support' is simply false," Feinstein wrote in the letter to Brown, The Yuba City/Marysville Appeal-Democrat reported. "Of the 21 local officials polled by the Department of the Interior on the Yuba Casino, only one (Yuba County) supported the project." Yuba County signed a memorandum of understanding with the Enterprise Rancheria, Supervisor John Nicoletti noted. Get the Story:
