City hires even more expensive lawyer for Mashpee gaming suit

The city of Fall River, Massachusetts, has hired a new attorney to defend the sale of land to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe.

The city's Redevelopment Authority was paying $295 an hour to attorney William Devereux. But now he's been replaced by Max Stern, whose hourly rate is $450.

The city has already spent $44,826 on the lawsuit, which alleges the sale of 45 acres to the tribe for $4.7 million is unlawful. The tribe intends to buy another 245 acres for $16 million.
