Oklahoma<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to slow down\u00a0and look at all of the pros and cons of\u00a0how this ruling will impact the Choctaw Nation\u00a0for generations to come,&#8221; Batton said.<\/p>\n<p>Batton did not outright disavow a so-called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/z\/supremecourt\/?p=394\">agreement-in-principle<\/a>&#8221; that was released in the wake of the landmark July 9 ruling. But he said he will remain at the table to ensure his people&#8217;s interests are protected.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is critical\u00a0that we do this right\u00a0to protect the sovereignty of our nation\u00a0and for the betterment of our people,&#8221;\u00a0said Batton. &#8220;There is no reason to rush to pursue\u00a0federal legislation at this time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcn-nsn.gov\">Muscogee (Creek) Nation<\/a>, whose reservation boundaries were affirmed in <em>McGirt<\/em>, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/News\/2020\/07\/20\/no-surrender-muscogee-creek-nation-stand.asp\">withdrawn from the agreement<\/a>. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/tulsaworld.com\/opinion\/columnists\/david-hill-the-muscogee-creek-nations-ancestors-never-gave-up-on-our-sovereign-rights-and\/article_3004ebaa-f9db-5504-ac00-fd84d8ef1b30.html\">opinion published in The Tulsa World<\/a> on July 29, Chief David Hill said his tribe will continue to work in a cooperative fashion with other governments.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/Lauren_King_JD\/status\/1288490576355024903<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The court\u2019s decision will not leave our lands lawless. Well before the Supreme Court decision, we had countless intergovernmental agreements with state and local municipalities to ensure the safety and protection of anyone located within our borders,&#8221; Hill wrote in the opinion. &#8220;The court\u2019s decision in McGirt only affirms our right, as a nation, to sit at the table of sovereigns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sno-nsn.gov\">Seminole Nation<\/a> also has disavowed the so-called agreement.
