\"COVID-19<\/p>\n

The Indian Health Service has updated its\u00a0coronavirus data<\/a>, showing results as of October 25, 2020.<\/p>\n

According to the data, 66,475\u00a0tests have returned positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. That represents an increase of 0.89 percent from the 65,889 cases previously reported<\/a> by the IHS.<\/p>\n

Altogether, 1,070,534\u00a0coronavirus\u00a0tests have been administered within the IHS through October 25, the data shows. That marks an increase of 0.47 percent from the day prior.<\/p>\n

Since the release of data from October 14, the\u00a0IHS has been providing additional information about the spread of the coronavirus. The\u00a0cumulative percent positive<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0column shows the historical COVID-19 infection rate, meaning the number of tests that have returned positive since the onset of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Based on the\u00a0cumulative percent positive<\/strong><\/em>, the highest rates are being seen in the\u00a0Phoenix Area<\/a>\u00a0(12.9 percent) the\u00a0Navajo Area<\/a>\u00a0(12.9 percent) and the\u00a0Tucson Area<\/a>\u00a0(8 percent). All three regions include the state of Arizona, indicating a disproportionate toll of COVID-19 in the state.<\/p>\n

The\u00a07-day rolling average positivity\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>column offers a contemporary look at the impact of the coronavirus. The data shows where COVID-19 cases have been increasing more recently.<\/p>\n

Based on the\u00a07-day rolling average positivity<\/strong><\/em>, three different areas have seen dramatic increases in COVID-19 cases. \u00a0They are: the\u00a0Great Plains Area<\/a>\u00a0(19.8 percent), the\u00a0Billings Area<\/a>\u00a0(17.6 percent) and the\u00a0Oklahoma City Area<\/a>\u00a0(11.6 percent).<\/p>\n

Overall, 6.6 percent of IHS tests have been positive since the onset of the pandemic. The 7-day average is slightly higher, at 8.2 percent.<\/p>\n

The data, however, is incomplete. While 100 percent of facilities run directly by the IHS are reporting data, only 33 percent\u00a0of tribally managed facilities and 44 percent\u00a0of urban Indian organizations are doing the same, the agency has told Indianz.Com.<\/p>\n

The agency also provided to Indianz.Com the\u00a0service population<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0for 2019:\u00a02,562,290.\u00a0Based on that figure, 41.8 percent of American Indians and Alaska Natives have been tested for the coronavirus since the IHS began reporting data in March.<\/p>\n

The IHS\u00a0user population<\/strong><\/em>, on the other hand, is a much smaller number. As of 2019,\u00a01,662,834 American Indians and Alaska Natives have lived\u00a0within a service delivery area and have received health care at an IHS or tribal facility during the previous three years.<\/p>\n

Based on the\u00a0user population<\/strong><\/em>, 64.4 percent of Native Americans have been tested for the coronavirus since the IHS began reporting data in March.<\/p>\n

Data are reported from IHS, tribal, and urban Indian organization facilities, though reporting by tribal and urban programs is voluntary. Data reflect cases reported to the IHS through 11:59 pm on October 25, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
