Armstrong Sr. announced another death of a community member to COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Cindy Mohr, from the Heron Clan of the New York-based tribe, passed away on June 12. She had just turned 65 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Mohr died following a &#8220;month long battle&#8221; with the coronavirus, Armstrong said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=d0pM686Z-ug\">video message<\/a>. She had been hospitalized after contracting the disease.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cindy was a beloved secondary teacher who inspired generations of students throughout her career,&#8221; Armstrong said. &#8220;She was the first Native American teacher in New York State to have a dual certification in elementary education and special education.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/marcpapaj\/posts\/10159920044343047<\/p>\n<p>Mohr&#8217;s passing comes after the <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/covid19\/?p=6105\">death of her older sister<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legacy.com\/obituaries\/oleantimesherald\/obituary.aspx?n=diane-l-kennedy&amp;pid=196280783&amp;fhid=15083\">Diane Kennedy<\/a>, on May 29. Diane was 71.<\/p>\n<p>The sisters <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/covid19\/?p=5807\">lost their mother<\/a>, beloved Heron Clan elder and Seneca language speaker&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legacy.com\/obituaries\/oleantimesherald\/obituary.aspx?n=norma-kennedy-john&amp;pid=196245474&amp;fhid=15083\">Norma Kennedy<\/a>, to COVID-19 a week prior, on May 23. Norma was 91 at the time of her passing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our entire nation community mourns with their family,&#8221; Armstrong said in his video message.<\/p>\n<p>Armstrong identified three additional community members who have died of COVID-19. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legacy.com\/obituaries\/oleantimesherald\/obituary.aspx?n=james-e-buffalo-jimmy&amp;pid=196082281&amp;fhid=15083\">James E. &#8220;Jimmy&#8221; Buffalo<\/a> passed away on April 24 at the age of 44. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legacy.com\/obituaries\/name\/debra-isaac-obituary?pid=196124413\">Debra Issac<\/a> passed away on April 30 at the age of 69. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wentlandfuneralhome.com\/obituary\/richard-kane\">Richard Kane<\/a> passed away on May 10 at the age of 80.<\/p>\n<p>The deaths have left &#8220;an unmistakable emptiness in the Seneca community,&#8221; Armstrong said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That loss should remind all of us how serious this virus still is,&#8221; the president said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Seneca Nation is mourning the loss of five community members to COVID-19.
