Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) and Rep. Deb Haaland (D-New Mexico) are calling on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to investigate the impacts of COVID-19 in Indian Country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This unprecedented pandemic is having a severe impact on American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian people,&#8221; Warren and Haaland write in a <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/covid19\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/warrenhaaland052620.pdf\">four-page letter<\/a>&nbsp;on May 26, 2020. &#8220;The Administration\u2019s failure to uphold the trust responsibility to provide adequate relief, health services, and public safety resources to tribal communities has exacerbated the pandemic\u2019s impact. This failure requires the Commission\u2019s voice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The federal government\u2019s insufficient response to this crisis to date represents yet another broken promise to sovereign tribal governments,&#8221; the lawmakers add in asking the commission to update its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/News\/2019\/11\/21\/broken-promises-report-details-governmen.asp\">recent &#8220;Broken Promises&#8221; report<\/a> with findings about the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>LETTER: &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/covid19\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/warrenhaaland052620.pdf\">Yet another broken promise to sovereign tribal governments<\/a>&#8216;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Warren, the senior senator from Massachusetts, is a former Democratic candidate for U.S. president.
