The Department of the Treasury is in the process of distributing a portion of the $8 billion coronavirus relief fund to tribal governments.<\/p>\n

As of May 6, $3.374 billion has been withdrawn from the fund, according to the latest Daily Treasury Statement<\/a>. The figure is in line with one that was cited in declaration filed in court by a senior department official<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“On May 5, 2020, Treasury began making payments to tribal governments,” Daniel Kowalski, who serves as Counselor to Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin said in the declaration<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“As of the morning of Wednesday, May 6, 2020, approximately $3.4 billion of the payments have been made,” Kowalski said.<\/p>\n

At this point, Treasury is only distributing $4.8 billion of the coronavirus relief fund to tribal governments. That accounts for 60 percent of the overall amount.<\/p>\n

Of the $4.8 billion, Treasury is withholding a portion that would go to Alaska Native corporations, pending resolution of an ongoing court case. The total amount of that set-aside has not yet been disclosed by the department but an approximation can be determined by looking at the Daily Treasury Statement.<\/p>\n

As part of the court case, a federal judge held a scheduling conference on May 7. An attorney from the Department of Justice promised to provide more information about Treasury’s process, as well as the Alaska Native corporation figures, in time for a hearing in a similar tribal lawsuit on May 8.<\/p>\n
