In an update on April 9, 2020, the Pueblo of Zuni confirmed 24 positive COVID-19 cases within the New Mexico-based tribe.<\/p>\n
The number marks an increase from the 15 previously reported by Governor Val Panteah<\/a>. It comes amid widespread testing on the reservation.<\/p>\n According to the latest update, a total of 192 people have been tested. Besides the 24 positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, 150 have tested negative. Results are pending from 18 individuals.<\/p>\n “The Pueblo of Zuni and Emergency Management is stressing to the community to adhere to the shelter-in-place and social distancing; understand that it takes one person to infect everyone around them,” the update reads.<\/p>\n The tribe has worked in conjunction with the New Mexico Department of Health to bring testing to the reservation. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D), a former member of U.S. Congress, has expressed concerns about coronavirus outbreaks in Pueblo communities<\/a>.<\/p>\n Results released by the state on April 9 show an increase of 13 new cases in McKinley County<\/a>. Zuni is located in the county, as is the city of Gallup, a hotspot for the coronavirus in New Mexico.<\/p>\n The county is also home to the main reservation of the Navajo Nation and the Ramah Chapter of the Navajo Nation.
