{"id":19247,"date":"2022-09-29T18:03:38","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T22:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/covid19\/?p=19247"},"modified":"2022-10-04T18:08:14","modified_gmt":"2022-10-04T22:08:14","slug":"indian-health-service-department-of-health-and-human-services-600","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/indianz.com\/covid19\/2022\/09\/29\/indian-health-service-department-of-health-and-human-services-600\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian Health Service (Department of Health and Human Services)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"float-right alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/covid19\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/29\/ihscovid19-300x300.png\" alt=\"ihscovid19\">The Indian Health Service has updated its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/coronavirus\/\">coronavirus data<\/a>, showing results through September 28, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>According to the data, 532,813 tests have returned positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/covid19\/2022\/07\/25\/indian-health-service-department-of-health-and-human-services-571\/\">July 24, the IHS reached a milestone<\/a>. According to the results, over a half-million IHS patients have tested positive for COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic in Indian Country more than two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the&nbsp;<em><strong>IHS service population<\/strong><\/em> of 2,562,290 from 2019, the figure means that <strong>20.8 percent of American Indians and Alaska Natives have been positive<\/strong> for the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the <em><strong>IHS user population<\/strong><\/em> of 1,662,834,<strong> 32 percent have tested positive<\/strong>. The <strong>user population<\/strong> is defined as the number of&nbsp;American Indians and Alaska Natives who have lived&nbsp;within a service delivery area and have received health care at an IHS or tribal facility during the previous three years.<\/p>\n<p>Altogether, 4,786,341 coronavirus tests have been administered within the IHS, the results show.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe class=\"embed-responsive-item\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"mapportal\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/maps.ihs.gov\/portal\/apps\/StoryMapBasic\/index.html?appid=5411113222c74d23bf09d6fa8c5909fd\"><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<div class=mb-2>Source: <a href=https:\/\/arcg.is\/1iGieS0>Indian Health Service<\/a><\/div>\r\n\n<p>Since mid-October of 2020, the IHS has been providing additional information about the spread of the coronavirus within the system. The&nbsp;<em><strong>cumulative percent positive<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;column shows the historical COVID-19 infection rate, meaning the number of tests that have returned positive since the onset of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the&nbsp;<em><strong>cumulative percent positive<\/strong><\/em>, the highest rates have been seen in five of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/locations\/\">12 IHS areas<\/a>. Two of them include the state of Arizona, indicating a disproportionate toll of COVID-19 in the state:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/navajo\/\">Navajo Area<\/a> \u2014 17.0 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/oklahomacity\/\">Oklahoma City Area<\/a> \u2014 15.5 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/phoenix\/\">Phoenix Area<\/a> \u2014 15.3 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/locations\/california-area\/\">California Area<\/a> \u2014 12.1 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/albuquerque\">Albuquerque Area<\/a> \u2014 11.0 percent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On January 19, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/oklahomacity\/\">Oklahoma City Area<\/a> overtook the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/phoenix\/\">Phoenix Area<\/a> as the region with the second highest percentage of cumulative percent positive tests. Still, the two regions have virtually the same cumulative positivity rate as of September 28.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<em><strong>7-day rolling average positivity&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>column offers a more contemporary look at the impact of the coronavirus. The data shows where COVID-19 cases have been increasing recently in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/locations\/\">12 areas of the IHS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/albuquerque\">Albuquerque Area<\/a> \u2014 17.5 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/nashville\/\">Nashville Area<\/a> \u2014 13.5 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/bemidji\/\">Bemidji Area<\/a> \u2014 13.2 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/navajo\/\">Navajo Area<\/a> \u2014 11.5 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/locations\/california-area\/\">California Area<\/a> \u2014 10.7 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/portland\/\">Portland Area<\/a> \u2014 9.3 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/oklahomacity\/\">Oklahoma City Area<\/a> \u2014 8.0 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/phoenix\/\">Phoenix Area<\/a> \u2014 7.7 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/billings\/\">Billings Area<\/a> \u2014 4.4 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/locations\/alaska-area\/\">Alaska Area<\/a> \u2014 4.5 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/locations\/great-plains-area\/\">Great Plains Area<\/a> \u2014 0.0 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/tucson\/\">Tucson Area<\/a> \u2014 0.0 percent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Overall, 11.8 percent of IHS tests have been positive since the onset of the pandemic, the data shows. Meanwhile, the 7-day positivity rate has been falling since reaching record highs over the summer of 2022. It now stands at 8.8 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The data, however, is incomplete. While 100 percent of facilities run directly by the IHS are reporting data, only 33 percent&nbsp;of tribally managed facilities and 44 percent&nbsp;of urban Indian organizations are doing the same, the agency has told Indianz.Com.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning June 7, 2021, the IHS began updating its coronavirus data on a weekly basis. But as the number of COVID-19 cases grows again, the agency is updating results twice a week \u2014 usually on Mondays and Thursdays. Throughout 2020 and the first half of 2021, results were provided by the IHS every day.<\/p>\n<h2>COVID-19 Cases by IHS Area<\/h2>\n<p>Data are reported from IHS, tribal, and urban Indian organization facilities, though reporting by tribal and urban programs is voluntary.
