That represents an increase of 0.9 percent from the 212,797 cases previously reported on August 10.

Altogether, 2,684,762 coronavirus tests have been administered within the IHS, the results show. That represents an increase of 0.8 percent from four days prior.

Since mid-October of 2020, the IHS has been providing additional information about the spread of the coronavirus within the system. The cumulative percent positive column shows the historical COVID-19 infection rate, meaning the number of tests that have returned positive since the onset of the pandemic.

Based on the cumulative percent positive, the highest rates have been seen in three areas. The data shows where COVID-19 cases have been increasing recently.

Based on the 7-day rolling average positivity, a record 10 areas (out of 12 IHS areas) are seeing higher COVID-19 rates. They follow:

Oklahoma City Area — 19.2 percent

California Area — 15.5 percent

Nashville Area — 11.8 percent

Phoenix Area — 11.7 percent

Portland Area — 7.9 percent

Navajo Area — 7.5 percent

Bemidji Area — 6.9 percent

Alaska Area — 6.2 percent

Billings Area — 5.4 percent

Great Plains Area — 5.0 percent

Notably, the 7-day rolling average positivity for the Alaska Area has steadily grown in recent weeks. The region recorded its highest-ever rate with the release of data on August 14, beating the record set on August 10.

Overall, 8.6 percent of IHS tests have been positive since the onset of the pandemic, the data shows. Meanwhile, the 7-day average has risen to 10.5 percent following a long period of far lower rates in the spring of 2021.

The data, however, is incomplete. While 100 percent of facilities run directly by the IHS are reporting data, only 33 percent of tribally managed facilities and 44 percent of urban Indian organizations are doing the same, the agency has told Indianz.Com.

Beginning June 7, the IHS began updating its coronavirus data on a weekly basis. But as the number of COVID-19 cases grows again, the agency is releasing results on Mondays and Thursdays. During the height of the pandemic throughout 2020 and the first half of 2021, results were provided every day.

COVID-19 Cases by IHS Area

Data are reported from IHS, tribal, and urban Indian organization facilities, though reporting by tribal and urban programs is voluntary. Data reflect cases reported to the IHS through 11:59 pm on August 14, 2021.

IHS Area

Tested

Positive

Negative

Cumulative

percent

positive

7-day rolling

average

positivity

Alaska

698,450

14,447

594,545

2.4%

6.2%

Albuquerque

104,129

8,505

74,536

10.2%

3.1%

Bemidji

184,397

12,382

169,123

6.8%

6.9%

Billings

107,986

7,638

97,000

7.3%

5.4%

California

98,871

9,505

85,231

10.0%

15.5%

Great Plains

160,379

14,753

145,111

9.2%

5.0%

Nashville

93,328

7,427

84,645

8.1%

11.8%

Navajo

285,487

33,712

202,762

14.3%

7.5%

Oklahoma City

588,097

70,002

514,090

12.0%

19.2%

Phoenix

190,975

24,165

166,028

12.7%

11.7%

Portland

140,077

9,221

130,383

6.6%

7.9%

Tucson

32,586

2,957

29,488

9.1%

3.7%

TOTAL

2,684,762

214,714

2,292,942

8.6%

10.5%

COVID-19 testing data is updated on Mondays and Thursdays.

Source: Indian Health Service (https://www.ihs.gov/coronavirus)

The Indian Health Service has updated its coronavirus data, showing 214,714 COVID-19 cases through August 14, 2021.

[7
137,14
post-14565","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-institutions","tag-hhs","tag-ihs
["GET
