That represents an increase of 0.6 percent from the 201,086 cases previously reported on July 10.

Altogether, 2,550,887 coronavirus tests have been administered within the IHS, the results show. That represents an increase of 0.7 percent from the week prior.

Since mid-October of 2020, the IHS has been providing additional information about the spread of the coronavirus within the system. The cumulative percent positive column shows the historical COVID-19 infection rate, meaning the number of tests that have returned positive since the onset of the pandemic.

Based on the cumulative percent positive, the highest rates have been seen in three areas. Two of them include the state of Arizona, indicating a disproportionate toll of COVID-19 in the state:

Navajo Area — 14.6 percent

Phoenix Area — 12.8 percent

Oklahoma City Area — 11.7 percent

Source: Indian Health Service

The 7-day rolling average positivity column offers a more contemporary look at the impact of the coronavirus. The data shows where COVID-19 cases have been increasing recently.

Based on the 7-day rolling average positivity, six areas (out of 12 IHS areas) are seeing higher COVID-19 rates. They follow:

Oklahoma City Area — 10.9 percent

Phoenix Area — 9.4 percent

California Area — 8.1 percent

Portland Area — 8.0 percent

Albuquerque Area — 7.3 percent

Nashville Area — 6.5 percent

Overall, 8.5 percent of IHS tests have been positive since the onset of the pandemic, the data shows. Meanwhile, the 7-day average has risen to 6.4 percent following a long period of far lower rates in the spring of 2021.

The data, however, is incomplete. While 100 percent of facilities run directly by the IHS are reporting data, only 33 percent of tribally managed facilities and 44 percent of urban Indian organizations are doing the same, the agency has told Indianz.Com.

Beginning June 7, the IHS began updating its coronavirus data on a weekly basis. Previously, results were released every day.

COVID-19 Cases by IHS Area

Data are reported from IHS, tribal, and urban Indian organization facilities, though reporting by tribal and urban programs is voluntary. Data reflect cases reported to the IHS through 11:59 pm on July 17, 2021.

IHS Area

Tested

Positive

Negative

Cumulative

percent

positive *

7-day rolling

average

positivity *

Alaska

661,517

12,662

566,020

2.2%

2.5%

Albuquerque

100,618

8,332

71,262

10.5%

7.3%

Bemidji

178,619

12,036

163,726

6.8%

3.2%

Billings

104,571

7,543

93,733

7.4%

0.0%

California

91,144

8,477

79,310

9.7%

8.1%

Great Plains

154,271

14,510

139,249

9.4%

2.8%

Nashville

84,796

6,493

77,364

7.7%

6.5%

Navajo

272,461

32,712

191,402

14.6%

4.2%

Oklahoma City

546,353

63,201

478,552

11.7%

10.9%

Phoenix

193,677

24,809

168,267

12.8%

9.4%

Portland

133,413

8,688

124,284

6.5%

8.0%

Tucson

29,447

2,844

26,449

9.7%

4.4%

TOTAL

2,550,887

202,307

2,179,618

8.5%

6.4%

COVID-19 Testing Data will be updated weekly beginning on Monday, June 7, 2021.

Source: Indian Health Service (https://www.ihs.gov/coronavirus)

The Indian Health Service has updated its coronavirus data, showing 202,307 COVID-19 cases through July 17, 2021.

[7
137,14
post-14185","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-institutions","tag-hhs","tag-ihs
["GET
