That represents an increase of 0.1 percent from the 195,925 cases previously reported by the IHS.

Altogether, 2,370,100 coronavirus tests have been administered within the IHS as of May 12. That represents an increase of about 0.2 percent from the day prior.

Since mid-October of 2020, the IHS has been providing additional information about the spread of the coronavirus within the system. The cumulative percent positive column shows the historical COVID-19 infection rate, meaning the number of tests that have returned positive since the onset of the pandemic.

Based on the cumulative percent positive, the highest rates have been seen in three areas. Two of them include the state of Arizona, indicating a disproportionate toll of COVID-19 in the state:

Navajo Area — 15.4 percent

Phoenix Area — 13.2 percent

Oklahoma City Area — 12.3 percent

Source: Indian Health Service

The 7-day rolling average positivity column offers a more contemporary look at the impact of the coronavirus. The data shows where COVID-19 cases have been increasing recently.

Based on the 7-day rolling average positivity, three areas (out of 12 IHS areas) are seeing higher COVID-19 rates. They follow:

Portland Area — 6.8 percent

Nashville Area — 5.4 percent

Bemidji Area — 5.3 percent

Overall, 8.9 percent of IHS tests have been positive since the onset of the pandemic, the data shows. Meanwhile, the 7-day average has declined significantly after increasing during the holiday season. It now stands at 3 percent.

The data, however, is incomplete. While 100 percent of facilities run directly by the IHS are reporting data, only 33 percent of tribally managed facilities and 44 percent of urban Indian organizations are doing the same, the agency has told Indianz.Com.

COVID-19 Cases by IHS Area

Data are reported from IHS, tribal, and urban Indian organization facilities, though reporting by tribal and urban programs is voluntary. Data reflect cases reported to the IHS through 11:59 pm on May 12, 2021.

IHS Area

Tested

Positive

Negative

Cumulative

percent

positive *

7-day rolling

average

positivity *

Alaska

605,299

12,035

516,401

2.3%

0.6%

Albuquerque

94,789

8,213 **

66,313

11.0%

3.6%

Bemidji

168,648

11,672

153,521

7.1%

5.3%

Billings

100,397

7,422

89,646

7.6%

1.2%

California

83,858

8,147

72,218

10.1%

2.9%

Great Plains

145,197

14,339

130,344

9.9%

2.3%

Nashville

79,342

6,252

72,232

8.0%

5.4%

Navajo

254,909

32,020

176,260

15.4%

4.3%

Oklahoma City

505,008

60,987

439,101

12.2%

2.3%

Phoenix

183,176

24,097

158,471

13.2%

4.7%

Portland

122,527

8,174

113,990

6.7%

6.8%

Tucson

26,950

2,788

24,008

10.4%

5.4%

TOTAL

2,370,100

196,146

2,012,505

8.9%

3.0%

** Albuquerque Area Positivity tests decreased due to data reconciliation.

* Cumulative percent positive and 7-day rolling average positivity are updated three days per week.

Source: Indian Health Service (https://www.ihs.gov/coronavirus)

The Indian Health Service has updated its coronavirus data, showing 196,146 COVID-19 cases through May 12, 2021.

[7
137,14
post-13304","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-institutions","tag-hhs","tag-ihs
["GET
