That represents an increase of less than 1 percent from the <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/covid19\/2021\/05\/07\/indian-health-service-department-of-health-and-human-services-371\/\">195,379 cases previously reported<\/a> by the IHS.<\/p>\n<p>Altogether, 2,349,504 coronavirus tests have been administered within the IHS as of May 6. That represents an increase of 0.2 percent from the day prior.<\/p>\n<p>Since mid-October of 2020, the IHS has been providing additional information about the spread of the coronavirus within the system. The&nbsp;<em><strong>cumulative percent positive<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;column shows the historical COVID-19 infection rate, meaning the number of tests that have returned positive since the onset of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the&nbsp;<em><strong>cumulative percent positive<\/strong><\/em>, the highest rates have been seen in three areas. Two of them include the state of Arizona, indicating a disproportionate toll of COVID-19 in the state:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/navajo\/\">Navajo Area<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 15.5 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/phoenix\/\">Phoenix Area<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 13.3 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/oklahomacity\/\">Oklahoma City Area<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 12.3 percent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe class=\"embed-responsive-item\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"mapportal\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/maps.ihs.gov\/portal\/apps\/StoryMapBasic\/index.html?appid=5411113222c74d23bf09d6fa8c5909fd\"><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<div class=mb-2>Source: <a href=https:\/\/arcg.is\/1iGieS0>Indian Health Service<\/a><\/div>\r\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em><strong>7-day rolling average positivity&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>column offers a more contemporary look at the impact of the coronavirus. The data shows where COVID-19 cases have been increasing recently.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the&nbsp;<em><strong>7-day rolling average positivity<\/strong><\/em>, five areas are seeing higher COVID-19 rates. They follow:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/california\/\">California Area<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 7.3 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/locations\/bemidji-area\/\">Bemidji Area<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 6.8 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/phoenix\/\">Phoenix Area<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 6.7 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/nashville\/\">Nashville Area<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 6.3 percent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/albuquerque\/\">Albuquerque Area<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 5.5 percent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Overall, 8.9 percent of IHS tests have been positive since the onset of the pandemic, the data shows. Meanwhile, the 7-day average has declined significantly after increasing during the holiday season. It now stands at 3.2 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The data, however, is incomplete. While 100 percent of facilities run directly by the IHS are reporting data, only 33 percent&nbsp;of tribally managed facilities and 44 percent&nbsp;of urban Indian organizations are doing the same, the agency has told Indianz.Com.<\/p>\n<h2>COVID-19 Cases by IHS Area<\/h2>\n<p>Data are reported from IHS, tribal, and urban Indian organization facilities, though reporting by tribal and urban programs is voluntary.
