That represents an increase of less than 1 percent from the 189,970 cases previously reported by the IHS.

Altogether, 2,194,490 coronavirus tests have been administered within the IHS through March 29, the data shows. That represent an increase of about 0.2 percent from the day prior.

Since mid-October of 2020, the IHS has been providing additional information about the spread of the coronavirus within the system. The cumulative percent positive column shows the historical COVID-19 infection rate, meaning the number of tests that have returned positive since the onset of the pandemic.

Based on the cumulative percent positive, the highest rates have been seen in three areas. Two of them include the state of Arizona, indicating a disproportionate toll of COVID-19 in the state:

Navajo Area — 16.3 percent

Phoenix Area — 13.9 percent

Oklahoma City Area — 12.9 percent

Source: Indian Health Service

The 7-day rolling average positivity column offers a more contemporary look at the impact of the coronavirus. The data shows where COVID-19 cases have been increasing recently.

Based on the 7-day rolling average positivity, four areas are seeing higher COVID-19 rates. They follow:

Bemidji Area — 5.6 percent

Nashville Area — 5.5 percent

Phoenix Area — 5.1 percent

Portland Area — 5.1 percent

Great Plains Area — 5 percent

Overall, 9.3 percent of IHS tests have been positive since the onset of the pandemic, the data shows. Meanwhile, the 7-day average has declined significantly after increasing during the holiday season but it appears to be slowly rising again. It now stands at 3 percent.

The data, however, is incomplete. While 100 percent of facilities run directly by the IHS are reporting data, only 33 percent of tribally managed facilities and 44 percent of urban Indian organizations are doing the same, the agency has told Indianz.Com.

COVID-19 Cases by IHS Area

Data are reported from IHS, tribal, and urban Indian organization facilities, though reporting by tribal and urban programs is voluntary. Data reflect cases reported to the IHS through 11:59 pm on March 29, 2021.

IHS Area

Tested

Positive

Negative

Cumulative

percent

positive *

7-day rolling

average

positivity *

Alaska

559,919

11,509

475,717

2.4%

1.1%

Albuquerque

91,509

8,064

62,630

11.4%

0.7%

Bemidji

150,781

10,478

136,748

7.1%

5.6%

Billings

96,314

7,348

85,637

7.9%

1.6%

California

75,242

7,757

64,340

10.8%

3.7%

Great Plains

137,061

14,054

122,481

10.3%

5.0%

Nashville

73,168

5,959 **

66,357

8.2%

5.5%

Navajo

236,510

31,328

161,457

16.3%

4.9%

Oklahoma City

469,725

60,087

404,660

12.9%

2.6%

Phoenix

168,910

23,285

144,778

13.9%

5.1%

Portland

109,997

7,443

102,206

6.8%

5.1%

Tucson

25,354

2,730

22,471

10.8%

0.0%

TOTAL

2,194,490

190,042

1,849,482

9.3%

3.0%

** Nashville Area Positive Tests decreased due to data reconciliation.

* Cumulative percent positive and 7-day rolling average positivity are updated three days per week.

Source: Indian Health Service (https://www.ihs.gov/coronavirus)

The Indian Health Service has updated its coronavirus data, showing 190,042 COVID-19 cases through March 29, 2021.

[7
137,14
post-12329","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-institutions","tag-hhs","tag-ihs
["GET
