The Indian Health Service has updated its coronavirus data<\/a>, showing results as of December 24, 2020.<\/p>\n

According to the data, 137,337 tests have returned positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. That represents an increase of 0.4 percent from the 136,764 cases previously reported<\/a> by the IHS.<\/p>\n

Altogether, 1,627,298 coronavirus tests have been administered within the IHS through December 24, the data shows. That marks an increase of 0.3 percent from the day prior.<\/p>\n

Since mid-October, the IHS has been providing additional information about the spread of the coronavirus within the system. The cumulative percent positive<\/strong><\/em> column shows the historical COVID-19 infection rate, meaning the number of tests that have returned positive since the onset of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Based on the cumulative percent positive<\/strong><\/em>, the highest rates have been seen in the Navajo Area<\/a> (15.6 percent), the Phoenix Area<\/a> (13.7 percent), the Oklahoma City Area<\/a> (11.8 percent), the Albuquerque Area<\/a> (10.9 percent) and the Great Plains Area<\/a> (10.5 percent). The first two regions include the state of Arizona, indicating a disproportionate toll of COVID-19 in the state.<\/p>\n

The 7-day rolling average positivity <\/strong><\/em>column offers a more contemporary look at the impact of the coronavirus. The data shows where COVID-19 cases have been increasing recently.<\/p>\n

Based on the 7-day rolling average positivity<\/strong><\/em>, three regions have seen dramatic increases in COVID-19 cases. They are: the Oklahoma City Area<\/a> (22.1 percent), the Navajo Area<\/a> (21 percent) and the Phoenix Area<\/a> (21 percent). Two of the three regions include the state of Arizona.<\/p>\n

Overall, 9.1 percent of IHS tests have been positive since the onset of the pandemic, the data shows. Meanwhile, the 7-day average has slowly risen over the last several days. It now stands at 13.9 percent.<\/p>\n
