Chairman Harvey Godwin, Jr., and Dr. Chamaine Brooks Locklear discuss vaccination efforts within the Lumbee Tribe in a video posted on May 6, 2021.
According to Locklear, a tribal citizen, only about 20 percent of the adult population in Robeson County has been vaccinated. The county is home to most of Lumbee territory in North Carolina.
In comparison, Locklear said about half of the adult population in the state has been vaccinated for COVID-19.
“We have a long ways to go to catch up to the state average of people vaccinated,” Locklear said in the video.
Godwin agreed. He encouraged Lumbee citizens to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
“We need 65 percent vaccination rate to get out of this, get clear of this pandemic and we are not near that yet,” Godwin said.
