Frequently Asked Question: “Why is the Navajo Education Incentive (NEI) funding only available to children going to school on the Navajo Nation?”
In response, the Department of Self Reliance is explaining that the NEI program is general funded, with a 1.5 million budget (this budget does not include any Cares Act funds). This amount will serve 6,000 children at $250 per child. The Navajo Department of Diné Education reported that the 2018-2019 Enrollment on the Navajo Nation was 33,883 children. Because the funding is limited, and will only serve 6,000 children, priority has been given to those children enrolled on the Navajo Nation, mostly due to the Nation’s high unemployment rates and limited opportunities for employment on the Navajo Nation.
