With Republican Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota threatening legal action over coronavirus checkpoints on two reservations, Kevin Abourezk of Indianz.Com will be going live with Francisca Tobacco from the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
Tobacco will be joining Indianz.Com from a checkpoint on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Her remarks come after Bryan Brewer, a former president of the tribe, defended his people’s sovereignty against the threat from the Republican governor.
“This is a sovereign nation. This is our homeland,” Brewer said from one of the checkpoints.
“We’re going to try to keep it sealed off and keep our people safe,” Brewer said of the need to protect the reservation from the spread of the coronavirus in South Dakota.
